Getting older and tying surf rigs is not as fun as it used to be. This Crimper was great, what usually took a half hour was done in minutes and felt stronger than my usual knots.

Penn Crimpers

I tried a cheap pair off of Amazon, and things didn't go well. I ordered the Penn crimpers thinking that they looked to be built pretty well, and had good reviews. I crimp a good deal of my big rigs, and these have been great. I have seen online a few people having freak breakage issues, but mine have been solid, and crimp perfectly. Jaws are even, grip is good. Zero complaints.

Use around the boat for larger fish. Been working good. I just spray down with wd40 and still rust free.

Wow, what a quality tool! I used a cheeper tool and thought 'there's got to be something better'. There is, this leader tool is impressive.

I liked this until it broke and pieces went flying
March 3, 2018
I had made a couple hundred crimps with the tool -- double-barrel copper in sizes .8mm through 1.6 mm. Today one of the jaws snapped off as I was doing a simple 1.3 mm crimp of a multi strand wire cable. One of the jaws, the crimp and the cable went flying. I still haven't found the jaw that broke off. I'm sure I'll step on it some day. Tools like this should not break -- or explode like this one did -- at the relatively modest pressures I apply in my lure and leader-making fishing prep. I can't recommend this tool.
Pros
  • It's pretty and the handle is more comfortable than some other crimpers I own.
Cons
  • Mine exploded. Fortunately the parts flew away from me instead of into my eye. I was wearing eye protection, but I'm glad it wasn't tested. I don't think the jaws are made of strong enough iron. Looks more like pot iron that forged steel. That's a problem.z

For someone that is inexperienced in making their own rigs this tool is great. Very sturdy and easy to use, the kind of quality you can expect from any Penn products
Cons
  • Maybe a little small for large crimps for large rigs. Eat your wheaties lol
