Solid reel

I now have over a dozen Okuma reels, for the money they can't be beat. The last reviewer complained about the slipping gear. I got a used like new reel sold because of the same problem. The gear is 2 piece pressed together. For $15 I got a new driver gear and pinion gear, super easy to work on. You CAN NOT get parts for any other reel that cheap. Okuma makes quality stuff you can fix yourself. I am going to buy another next size down.
Pros
  • Easy to get parts

I bought two of these reels (Z-40s) and paired then up with 7' medium action rods rated for 15-40lb line. Only after about a year one of the reels completely failed me as the main drive gear slipped and make a the lovely crunching cracking noise as i attempted to reel in the fish on the end of the line. I have to be honest i was heart broken especially because i was down a reel on a trip and because i paid good money for a 4000 series reel that i thought would last at least 5-10 years. the quality is that of a Walmart reel. Very disappointed.

these set ups were used for hogfish, mangrove snapper, small grouper fishing off the west coast of Florida.

i use diawa BG, Peen Spin-fisher, and would recommend them well before another Okuma.
Pros
  • light weight
  • large drag capacity " at least advertised"
Cons
  • Main Drive Gear slipped making the reel useless.
  • maybe bearing issue causing gear gear to not seat correctly.
  • broke

Quality and power in a little reel

This is a solid product. Smooth light and there’s no doubt it will handle a bigger saltwater fish for its size yet has a great feel of a smaller reel.
