The whole rockaway surf line are great rods. This particular rod I bought for the purpose of ocean side and back bay fluke bucktailing and jig heads. The rod loads and casts well. Very sensative, not only is the bite detection great, it also transfers every motion and bounch of the bucktail or jighead to your hands. Good back bone and handled some nice fluke up to 26 inches, schoolie stripers up to 30 inches and a few cocktail blues up to 24 inches very well. I do have to admit my first impression after unwrapping wasnt good and thought it would feel like a wet noodle when fighting fish. But after only one fall run of fishing it had me convinced.
Pros
  • Quality made, actions, perfect and ideal for my purpose and of course price point.
Cons
  • Reel seat, but thats my personal preference.

I’ve been picking up some new rods and reels for the fall fishing season and the Rockaway Surf rod was among the purchases. I’m amazed by how durable this rod is considering how light it is. I can cast all day and not get a sore shoulder. I primarily throw metals and swimming plugs and for that this rod works well.

Hello would a Daiwa Fuego LT 2500 D pair well with the ML?  I am trying to put together the lightest weight surf setup for whiting and general first trough and close to shore surf and jetty fishing.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Would the medium rod pair good with a shimano spheros 5000?
1 Answer
Hi Skyler, The Okuma RSP-S-862M Rockaway Surf SP Rod would be too light for your Shimano Spheros 5000 SW. I would recommend the Okuma RHD-S-902M Rockaway HD Surf Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/okuma-rhd-s-902m-rockaway-hd-surf-rod.html This rod is a little bit longer at 9ft and a little bit heavier at 9oz and would balance alot better with your Spheros 5000 SW for surf fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Considering getting a RSP-S-862M for targeting California Halibut from the surf with a Lucky Craft 110 SP. I am wondering how well this rod would be cast them considering that the lures are 5/8 ounce. Would be running them on 15# test braid. Opinions? I am also open to other suggestions for rods up to $200. Thanks.
1 Answer
The RSP-S-862M would be a good choice for throwing those Lucky Crafts. They are at the tail end of the rod's lure ratings but should still work fine in this case.
