Solid performance

Ordered the 10' heavy action rod for trip to Cabo. Case was too big for my suitcase, but carried it on. Also able to fit a 4 piece, lighter action spinning rod inside case. Cast 2.5-5oz topwater plugs, 2-2.5oz metal, 2.5oz plastics with good distance. Tested at a football field before the trip with a 3oz bank sinker, and was reaching between 110-117 yds consistently. Matched with a Shimano Ultegra XTD 5500 with 30lb braid. Although it's tough casting big plugs and screaming them back to shore all day, this rod was up to the challenge and light enough not to wear you out. Now, I'd like to see if I can get just the top 2 sections and save some $ and have 2 rods, H and MH.
Pros
  • Rod is built well and looks really nice. No line tangles.
Cons
  • You need a suitcase or bag at least 26" long inside

Unbelievably good quality for the price.

I was very pleased with my purchase. High quality at a fair price. I bought the 10 foot heavy version for surf fishing and the convenience of a four piece travel rod. I thought I would sacrifice quality due to having four pieces. I was wrong. It is better than some other rods I have that are two piece rods. I was so pleased I purchased a second one to take my grandsons with me.
Pros
  • a second one

Great surf rod for traveling. I originally intended to buy the MH, but it was out of stock so I got the Heavy instead, and I don't regret it! I only wish it had more guides, at least one. Still, this is a very sturdy and compact rod. If the MH comes back in stock, I'd buy it too. Paired it with a Penn Battle III DX 5500.
Pros
  • Compact
  • Easy to carry
  • Heavy duty
Cons
  • Not enough guides

Super Strong
July 3, 2021
I bought this specific rod because it was rated the highest for lure weight and line weight out of all of the travel surf rods. The rod sure lives up to the ratings. It is a great fit for heavier surf or rock applications. I use this for smalls sharks off of the beach in NJ and for Roosterfish and Jacks off the beach in Costa Rica. This rod has great backbone and can barely tell it is multiple pieces. You are also easily able to carry this rod onto the plane with your carry on luggage. I have had no problems with TSA and security.
Pros
  • Power
  • Strength
  • Quality
  • Travels well

I was surprised at how well made this travel rod is. Comparable to the triumph dare i say it. Triumph has the edge on sensitivity a bit though but this is a great cheaper alternative.
Pros
  • Light weight
  • Well made ferrules
  • Holds up to my abuse

Excellent Build, Action and Looks
May 6, 2021
I just received my new Nomad Travel Surf Rod (1004H) and could not be happier. The case is perfectly sized for the rod and includes a handle. If it doesn't fit in my suitcase (I'm pretty sure it will), I should be able to carry it on with no problem.

The rod feels very sturdy--the ferrules fit nicely and the guides seem very strong. The action of the rod seems exactly as described--not too stiff for the heavy model.

I love the dark blue color of the rod as well.

I cannot wait to use this rod in Cabo in July! I will post an update after my trip. I will be Targeting Roosterfish from the beach--casting large poppers and a few sub-surface jigs in the 2-3oz range.
Pros
  • Looks
  • Travel/Carrying Case w/Handle
  • Action
  • Value for Money
  • Well-built
Cons
  • None

Very nicely fit and finished, moderate action, the parts fit securely, and disassembles easily, can launch a 3 oz weight and lure a long way. Best price I could find. The case is nice, but best carried or in your luggage. Worked and balanced well with a Battle II 5000.

beautiful rod

Beautiful rod, well executed and quality components, easy to assemble, nice moderate action and well priced.

Rod case had a stuck zipper but Tackle Direct's customer service was excellent to work with and fast. If you are looking for a quality travel rod, the Okuma Nomad is a candidate.

I haven't had a chance to fish with the rod yet. I bought the rod for an up coming trip to Costa Rica. It's very light. Good guides, good reel seat, ferrels are long. the carrying case is good. PVC wrapped in canvas with a zip top. I bought the 1004H, I'm glad I did, when assembled and checking the action of the rod it is a good moderate/fast action rod with a strong backbone. The Jack's and Roosterfish will let me know if it's as good as I think it is.
Pros
  • On sale for 119. the rod comes with the travel case. 34" long. can use as a carry on.
Cons
  • none yet

I already have a couple of surf rods but needed a travel surf rod for a trip to Cabo I'm going to be taking. I had checked just about every site and store-none of them were anywhere close in price than here. I really lucked out. It came in a timely fashion and looks great. Can't wait to start pulling the fish in at Cabo!

I am taking this rod (NTS-S-1004H) to Cabo this summer and am looking for a spinning reel that will pair perfectly and suit my surf fishing needs.

I will be repeatedly casting 2-3oz lures with this rod, so require something that is not too heavy and will cast long distances.  I also need good line capacity, high retrieve rate and smooth/solid drag, since targeting Roosterfish.  I  will probably be using 30# braid with a 50# fluro leader.

I think I've narrowed it down to these reels: Diawa BGMQ600D; Quantum Cabo PT 50SZ; Diawa Ballistic BLSLT6000D; Penn Spinfisher VI Long Cast 5500; Shimano Thunnus Ci4 TU6000CI4.

What do you recommend (even if not on this list)? The Thunnus is definitely at the very top of my price point.

Thank you

1 Answer

I would recommend one of these three, the Daiwa BGMQ6000D-H BG MQ Spinning Reel good drag; 26.4lb, and good line capacity and fairly light with a 5.7:1 ratio. Shimano STC5000XGFL Stradic FL Spinning Reel  this reel is the lightest at 9.3oz and offers a little less drag at 24.3lbs and a little less line capacity but that is made up for in its ratio of 6.2:1. The last one is the Penn Spinfisher VI SSVI6500 Spinning Reel plenty of line on this one 485yds at 30lb, a little heavier than the other two at 22.3oz, but does offer the most drag at 30lbs and a good ratio at 5.6:1. Remember that when rooster fishing you want as fast a retrieve as possible while also keeping in mind trying to keep it fairly light and able to fight the fish effectively. The long cats model of the SpinFisher has just too low of a retrieve rate to be effective for roosterfish.
