Okuma's "Carbonite" drag system features a newly-developed carbon-based drag material which displaces heat and friction consistently and steadily even under the harshest of fishing conditions. Used in conjunction with a small amount of specially-formulated Okuma drag grease, the Carbonite drag system allows for a much wider and smoother drag range, all while maintaining exceptional performance and pure fish-stopping power.

Nimble, agile and simply a ton of fun to fish, the Okuma Cortez brings light tackle performance to a whole new category of anglers. Drop down gearbox, swept in handle and Ergo Grip handle knob accentuate balance and delivery of power from the XL gearing, red anodized machined aluminum spool and multi-disc Carbonite drag system. Graphite frame and side plates maintain a feather light feel and balance while increasing corrosion resistance.
  • Corrosion resistant graphite frame and sideplates
  • Machined aluminum, red anodized star
  • Multi-disc Carbonite drag system
  • 4BB+1RB stainless steel bearings
  • External magnetic cast control system
  • Dual anti-reverse system (mechanical & roller bearing)
  • XL Gearing: Drop down gear box with 6.2:1 gear ratio
  • Quick-Set anti-reverse roller bearing
  • MSS: Mechanical Stabilizing system for increased durability
  • Self lubricating gear system on all models
  • Cortez reels are backed by a 1-year warranty

bought the 10 and the 12. Very fast and smooth retrieve. Great for throwing jigs and irons. Comfortable handle and smooth winding. Very impressed with the quality. CS 10 is great for most species in southern California, have caught bass, barracuda, smaller yellowtail, dorado, and smaller tuna.

Finally fished this baby last weekend and it was buttery smooth as expected. Paired with a Lamiglas Blue Water rod it was beatuiful for black sea bass and fluke out at the Mudhole. Another great Okuma product!

Okuma CZ-12CS Cortez

Been using Penn GTIs for over 20 years. Bought 2 CZ12s and now in the process of switching all my Penn reels out to Okuma.Smooth, fast, strong and reliable. Best reel for the money that I have ever used. Holds plenty of line for smoker Kings and fast Palegics. Can't beat the 6.1-1 ratio speed and smooth drag system. I have already turned alot of my fishing buddies into believers with these reels.

Hello, this reel vs Diawa sl30? I do not seem to find alot of reviews on this reel.
1 Answer
All depends on what application your using it for. The Cortez are great reels that can handle alot of inshore species while the sl30 is a smaller reel good for bay and shore fishing.

Would this reel with the following boat rod:

Okuma CJ-C-561XXHA Cedros A Series Rod???

1 Answer
Hi Doug, The Okuma CZ-5CSA Cortez Star Drag Reel would be a little light for the Okuma CJ-C-561XXHA Cedros A Series Rod. Instead I would recommend a Penn FTHII25NSD Fathom II Star Drag Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-fthii25nsd-fathom-ii-star-drag-reel.html This would pair and balance well with the CJ-C-561XXHA Cedros A Series Rod for saltwater fishing applicaitons. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Good Morning, How does This reel Compare To The Saltist 15H For Black Fish haddock & Cod.
1 Answer
Hi Nicholas, The Okuma CZ-10CSA Cortez Star Drag Reel features a external magnetic cast control system, and has a corrosion resistant graphite frame and sideplates . The Daiwa SALTIST15H Saltist Star Drag has a Centrifugal Braking System and is built from machined aluminum with an anodized finish for greater corrosion resistance. These are the biggest differences between these reels. Both reels would be fine for the fishing applications you described. If you are fishing deep water the Okuma CZ-10CSA Cortez Star Drag Reel is rated for a higher line capacity and will be better suited for deep water fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

How does the line go onto the spool evenly without a guide
1 Answer
At times you will have to manually move the line with you fingers or thumb if it is building up too much in one area. Many anglers prefer conventional reels without a level wind because the level wind mechanism can easily break during heavy drag applications, and if the level wind breaks while you are out on the water, your reel is unusable for the remainder of the trip.

What size would you recommend for striped bass and big black drum?
1 Answer
The CZ-5CSa will have a sufficient line capacity and max drag for your application assuming you are using braided line. You might want to step up to the CZ-10CSa if you are using mono.

How does this reel hold up for 100+ tuna????
1 Answer
For 100+ pound tuna I would recommend a bigger reel for the job. Something like a bigger Avet or a Penn International series.
