Some say it's less expensive to buy fish from a store than actually catch it yourself. First off, where's the fun in that? And secondly, we may have to disagree when it comes to Avenger spinning reels. Effortlessly smooth and highly capable, Avengers have put more fish on the bank or boat than any other Okuma product. With a multi-disc drag system, six bearing drive system and our patented EOS elliptical oscillation system, it's no surprise why Avengers are serious spinning reels everyone can afford to own and enjoy. And a reel we're very proud to offer in sizes from 15 all the way to an 80.
  • Multi-disc Japanese oiled felt drag washers
  • 6 ball bearings for ultimate smoothness
  • 1 Quick-Set Anti-Reverse roller bearing
  • Precision machine-cut brass pinion gear
  • Rigid diecast aluminum handle design
  • Now featuring a patented Elliptical Oscillation System

For the money it is great

Not the best reel, but for the money you can’t go too wrong. I use it as a back up or if I take a buddy out on the kayak with me.

For $40 you can’t beat it. Smooth and has a nice drag too.
Pros

Good Value for the $$ 40b
November 14, 2018
I paired this 40b with an 8' Ugly Stick with 12lb line and use it on the jetty. Small blues and fluke <3lbs is the norm. Reel works great, I love Okuma reels. I must have half a dozen. Never had a problem with any of them.
Pros
  • Good value.

Great for Beginners
September 13, 2018
My daughter, who just turned 10, decided that she wanted to learn how to fish with her daddy. At first, I bought her a cheap rod and reel set from Target, but she quickly outgrew that reel, so I decided to get the deal from TackleDirect with these Okuma Avenger reels! Buy one get one free was a deal I could not pass up and it was a great decision!
The ease of operation, fluid and free action on this reel helped my daughter reel in faster and cast out further. She has yet to catch something, but it is all in time!

These are tough little real's!

These little reels are worth every penny. My granddaughter and I now have matching sets. We have already caught over 25 Sea trout and three redfish in East Central Florida. I should've double down on my order, great value.

Good reel for the sale price.
August 31, 2018
Purchased 2 of these reels and had them spooled with 15lb braid. I put them to use on my boat as boat reels so that I wouldn't have to worry about boat rash on my more expensive reels. They did pretty good fighting slot reds between 18-27 inches. Only concern is that I felt like I was going to break the handle arm while really in reds in the upper slot range. For the price they are not bad at all. I still ended up buying 2 more in the event I end up breaking some. I wouldn't pay the retail price for them.
Pros
  • Good looking smooth reel.
Cons
  • When fighting bigger fish there was a lot of extra bend in the reel arm and reel handle.

First impression right out of the box

Very smooth operation, and you can turn the anti-reversion feature on and off.
all parts fit good, no wobble in the spool, or the spool halo. Good looking reel that comes to hand naturally, and the handle just feels good.
Pros
  • Seems to be well made for the price, and has features only available in more expensive reels.
  • Good reel for the money.
Cons
  • The point where the bail release lever cams into play, IE; the point where the bail closes is at the 9 o'clock
  • position. In order for the bail to close, spool halo needs some speed to be built up so that the bail release lever
  • can be tripped. If you open the bail close to the release point, it will be difficult to trip the release lever when you start
  • reeling. This can be distracting to a new fisherperson, and an inconvenience to experienced anglers.
  • Hence a 3 star, not a 4 I would give it otherwise. Would not recommend for a new, young angler .

Would the 55B be heavy enough for Catfish or would you recommend a different reel.
1 Answer
Depends on the species of catfish but you should probably go a size up to the 65

I have 2 rods and one reel! Hurricane calico jack 7’6 with Penn battle II. I was wondering what size Okuma reel to use on my other hurricane redbone 7’6 would be close to the Penn 4000?
1 Answer
The Okuma Avenger 55 is a bit larger than the Penn Battle 4000 and the 40 size Okuma is smaller. You would have to decide if you want a smaller reel (okuma avenger 40) or a slightly larger reel (okuma avenger 5) in comparison to the Penn Battle 4000.

What is the braid capacity for these 55 b and the 40?..thanks.
2 Answers
Okuma only lists the line capacities for mono-filament. You can estimate the braid capacity by using the braid's equivalent mono diameter. For example most 50lb.
Submitted by: Devon on March 11, 2017
For the 55B you can fit 365 yds of 50 lb Power Pro. The 40B can fit 325 yds of 30 lb Power Pro and 205 yds of 50 lb Power Pro. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs.
