High end rod
December 29, 2021
There have been times I have been out on the water with my lighter surf outfits and would be wishing I took my heavier 10' outfit instead. The weather starts off one way but then ends up another which is why I needed to get something that was lightweight but could also handle the heavier lure weights when the conditions call for it. I haven't been able to try it out yet but I am hopeful it will perform as intended. I had done a lot of research prior to purchasing this rod and have heard many good things about it.

My initial impressions of the rod are all positive. You can tell this is a higher end rod.
Pros
  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable grips
  • It feels great in hand
  • Thin

Very nice rod and I am very happy with it. Definitely the best rod I have ever owned. I liked it so much I bought another Frontier rod in a 9'6" length also. I am using the 11'6" rod with a Penn Slammer III 5500 reel with balances out well and the 9'6 rod with a Penn Slammer III 3500.
Pros
  • Very light weight
  • Balanced feel to it
  • Quality components

I purchased the 10’6 rod to pair with a VR150 and VSX200. I noticed a significant improvement in casting distance, and it throws the whole weight range very well. Throws everything from light bucktails to 3oz poppers.

Best surf rod for top water!
August 9, 2020
I have a 13 Stella 14000XG and needed a rod to go with; I did a lot of homework and looked at plenty of surf rods. Tackle Direct were the ones that had it so I bought it. This rod is amazing! I've had Lamiglass, St. Croix Legends, and Century Sling Shots. The moderate-fast action feels unbelievably crisp and yet still gives you the slinging action to catapult the top water lures out. At 3-4 oz. is the sweet spot for this rod. You can cast a mile with it. Don't be afraid to whip the heavier lures out; it can withstand it. When hooked on a 25-35 in. stripers, depending on the current, the rod has plenty of back bone to fight these pigs. I would say that if you go any bigger on the lures and faster currents- the Jiggster will be ideal. But for what I do and to be casting for hours- this rod is 2nd to none!
Pros
  • The Feel- the moderat-fast action does great for popping all top water lures. The sensitivity for all swimbaits, bucktails, jerk baits, and even live baits on the surf is awesome! It may be long but you can still feel the bottom and detect every fish tapping on your lure.
  • For casting- again, the moderat action with a strong back bone allows you to sling 1-1/2 - 4 oz with ease and distance!
  • Handling fish- crisp but with the moderate fast action, it provides you the parabolic dampening to easily tire out the fish. This does not put the strain on your forearm and shoulder.
Cons
  • None- job well done ODM!

Got the 10’6” 2-6 ounce for surf fishing the jersey shore. It can cast 6oz lead with ease and still cast lures down to 1-1/8 very well. Versatile, strong, sensitive, light as a feather. Perfect surf rod. ODM is on point.

Great Powerful Rod
March 14, 2018
Very nice lightweight rod. Haven't got chance to catch with it, spring coming soon. Test casting everything from 1/2 oz to 4 oz, and rod handles all with no problem. Cast distance is great and rod seems powerful. Can't wait until spring to catch on it.

FOR THE ALL DAY CASTER
October 7, 2017
Purchased 10'6" Frontier in the Spring and all I can say is that for the avid fisherman who casts for hours at a clip this is the Surf Rod for you. Built to stand on the beach, jetty or rock and cast all day with little effort. I've fished 3/4-4oz bucktails, pencils, poppers, minnows, darters, bottles & Whip-it fish each lure is an extension of my hand. I'm completely amazed by the technology and realize now this rod was built by fisherman for fisherman at mind. Moderate/fast action with hook ups extending right to the reel. ODM Frontier is in a league of its own. Hats off to the boys of ODM and look forward to seeing your crew on the Beach. Tight Lines.
Pros
  • Cast all day thin lightweight profile, yet strong enough backbone to fight fish at the Canal. Great touch on all lures with immediate response. Awesome action on hook up with parabolic bend. I promise you will add 15-20 yards to the cast. Just load and launch.
Cons
  • Extend the forehand grip above reel for the swimmer in mind who bites down on the stick.

Would the vsx 150 be a good match for the 106 3/4-4 or should I pair a vsx200 for casting the whole range (3-4/4) lures all day

Which of the ODM Frontier X Saltwater surf spinning rods would match best with the Shimano Saragosa 14000 for casting top-water lures farthest? Considering the 10'6' vs 11'6" versions. I'm trying to get beyond 2 sandbar in areas of FL panhandle and AL coastal waters.

How well do the lure ratings match up? Will the 10'-6" 2-6 oz cast a 1 oz lure effectively, or would the 3/4-4 be better suited.  I want to be able to cast 4 oz with no worries.
1 Answer
The ratings on these rods match well to what they are advertised to throw. It really depends on what type of fishing you plan on using it for. If you're bait fishing, then I would go with the 2-6oz. model, but for throwing plugs, I would use the 3/4-4 ounce model. The 4 oz. you desire to throw would be at the tail end of what this rod is rated for, but it would still hold up.
