Penn Jigmaster - preferred by live bait anglers because of its high-speed retrieve and quick-take apart frame, useful for changing spools when fishing conditions dictate.
The Penn Jigmaster was one of the earliest designed casting reels from Penn and is still going strong as a favorite casting reel for anglers fishing the Albacore Day Boats on the West Coast, as well as Kingfish anglers in the Southeast. The Jigmaster features a quick take-apart feature that allows anglers to change spools (and line classes) while on the water. This little trick has saved more than one or two fishing trips for anglers, when the fish become line and leader shy, and scaling down of tackle is required. Needless to say, keeping a spare spool or two on the boat or in the tackle box is a great idea, and allows anglers to move up or down a line class in a matter of seconds.
  • Quick take-apart frame makes it easy to change spools with different line weights.
  • Black-anodized aluminum spool.
  • Durable and lightweight composite side plates.
  • Manganese-bronze main gear.
  • Stainless steel pinion.
  • Ht-100 powered Drag System.
  • Counter-balanced handle with oversized fighting knob.
  • Corrosion-resistant chrome-plated external parts.

Timeless classic
April 30, 2020
This reel dominated in the 70’s, 80’s, even 90’s. I caught lots of tuna in 20-60 lb class on 40 lb mono. Always used it on long range trips back in the 90’s. Countless barracuda, bonito, bass, rockfish, dorado, yellowtail. Any fish over 40lbs should ideally be landed on a bigger reel but the 500 is very capable. Abused mine since the 80’s and it still works fine. Not a good casting reel. There’s a lot of better reels out there but you can’t beat a classic winner.
Pros
  • Low maintenance, cost, durable
Cons
  • Poor casting

Simply the best.

For the size fish I am bring in with this real (tunas up to 45, yellow tail to 35 pounds) and usually fishing with 25# Big Game line. I have the option to go to 30# and even 40# with the quick change of the spool. I don't doubt with 30# a fifty to sixty pound tuna would be possible however when the fish start averaging fifty I go to a larger real.
Pros
  • quick change spool. easy maintenance and dependability, really smooth drag with good line capacity.
Cons
  • have not found one.

Grandfather left it to me when he passed so i don't use it anymore out of respect, but it is as smooth as the first time i used it as a kid on his boat.

Reliable, Durable, Maintainable !
March 29, 2018
I started with a Jigmaster 500 in the early 80's, this reel, undoubtedly is simply the best reel for the money. It is EASY to maintain, easy to clean rinse and lube after every fishing trip with a (1) spring loaded screw to open and close. I have hooked up with gorilla blue fish, stripers and medium size wahoo, without a doubt, for the $$$, Penn jigmaster simply the best ! Can't go wrong.
Pros
  • Easy to maintain, very little maintenance
Cons
  • None

Classic Workhorse

This is a classic reel. If use it within its specifications, this reel can last a lifetime. 30 - 40lb test line no problem. I have many reels that I rotate but I always take my Penn Jigmasters out with me. It is a proven reel and the single screw take down makes changing spools super easy. If it breaks, parts are readily available and maintaining it is simple.
Pros
  • Easy spool change for line class change
  • Easy Maintenance with parts readily available
  • Many upgrades available for those who want to modify them
Cons
  • Handle can be improved

A classic that will always have a place with my gear.

It's hard to give a star rating on this reel. In a market with reels like the tld, avet, and so on, it is big, heavy, outdated, and nowhere near as smooth. That said, I still love the classic look and feel, and you will not find a tougher more versatile reel for the money. Penn's drag material is incredible! There is a tremendous amount of aftermarket support for this reel making it one that can be truly customized to your liking. The quick take apart feature is awesome. Turn one screw by hand, then lift and twist and the reel comes apart into 3 main pieces which makes rinsing with freshwater a snap. Another great thing about that, is that if you have multiple spools and your thumb slips on a cast, instead of spending the next hour untangling it, just reel it in, cut the line, and swap in a fresh spool! I own a saltist, an avet, and an accurate...and I still keep 2 of these ready to fish.
Pros
  • durable
  • classic design
  • unlimited custom parts available
  • value
Cons
  • steep learning curve for casting

Does the jigmaster  500L take the same quick change spool as the old jigmaster 500S (red side)
1 Answer
The 500S was a different model Penn released awhile back and the 500L is the current model. The 500L does have the option to quickly swap out spools, but most likely not with the 500S model and only with other 500L model spools.

What would be the best rod to pair with this reel for offshore oil rig fishing. I plan on fishing both the bottom, live/dead baits, and working lures
1 Answer
I would go with the Tsunami TSTBC-J701XH Trophy Jigging Rod.

I surf fish often catching fish weighing up to 45lbs. What type of fishing line and type of rod would you suggest using with this Pen Jigmaster reel? Do you ship outside of theU.S.A.?
2 Answers
We ship outside the USA all the time. Shipping costs are calculated in our shopping cart. We would recommend using braided line on that reel, paired up with a Penn Torque surf rod. http://www.tackledirect.com/penn-torque-surf-rods.html

With the drag range on this reel, I wouldn't use more than about 30lb line. In the surf, especially if its rocky, I would run 30lbs power pro with about 100 yards of 30lb mono on top. The mono can handle the scrapes against the rocks a lot better than braid. Penn's surf rods are very good. One note on whatever rod you use, I wrap electrical tape around the joint a few times. I've had the tip section of my surf rods twist in the joint when slinging 8 & bait. I've caught 100lbs sharks with this reel loaded with 30, you just have to work the drag and let him run some.
