These are the pliers you've been looking for
June 2, 2021
I've lost count how many different pliers I have tried. Bent them, broke them, had line cutters that don't cut line, you name it. These are expensive but worth it. Just last trip they did everything from removing hooks to cutting 7 strand that had gotten stuck in the prop.
Pros
  • Strong, well made, excellent line cutters
Cons
  • None that I have seen

Best Christmas Gift Surprise
January 1, 2019
I gave the 7in Van Staal pliers to my Brother for Christmas. He fished with me this Summer, and expressed, how much he liked my pliers, I purchased my Van Staal pliers in 2013. They are still as good today as they were back then. They should last a lifetime, cutting braid, pulling treble hooks, clipping leaders, and snipping tag ends off knots. If I'm in my boat they are on my side.
Pros
  • Never rust, leather pouch, long lanyard, sharp replaceable cutters, quality construction.
Cons
  • None

Amazing in fit and finish. Very nice ergonomic grip makes it very easy to find the cutter side or grip the pliers. Cut mono, wire, braid, and cable like butter.
Pros
  • Everything
Cons
  • Price, however...buy once buy for life.

Hopefully like everyone else who buys these, they will be the last pair of pliers I ever need. Expensive but seem to be well built.

I had had the Van Staal Pliers since they came out. I have swam with them on my belt, abused them, and they still function like they're brand new.

I am fly fishing with spey rods for sea trout and atlantic salmon, which size shall I select, 7 or 6 inch? The 6 inch looks to small but has this needle noose that looks good, at the other hand the 7 inch looks more sturdy but could be to big in some cases when unhooking smaller flies. I would really appreciate some feedback before I place an order. Kind Regards
1 Answer
The Van Staal 7" Pliers have a longer neck allowing for more precise contact to smaller hooks and flies.
