Life changing, with a few improvements

If you've got a front hitch installed, this thing is the way to go! I really wanted to be able to keep my rods and coolers on the front of the truck instead of having just a rod rack on the front of the truck and backing in to the beach so I can use the tailgate for the cooler. This left my expensive rods hanging out at the front of the vehicle and easy to take. This rack is great. Now everything is in my sight all the time, I can easily rig rods up, change out tackle, cut bait on the bait board accessory, 'spike' a rod in the rack and sit in the truck to get out of the sun,rain,wind, etc. and still be looking towards the water.
Pros
  • Puts everything exactly where you need it. You can run one big cooler, or like I've got two igloo 25 quart coolers and a 6 gallon fresh water container. One igloo cooler is for bait, and I use the other cooler as dry storage for tackle and weights,, a place to keep a drink out of the sun, holds my line if I need to re-spool a reel, whatever I need so I'm not running back and forth to the bed of the truck. I keep a food/drink cooler and a caught fish cooler in the bed since I don't need access to that stuff all the time.
Cons
  • The 'stabilizer bar' that is supposed to take the wiggle out of the hitch is absolutely useless. It's a nice decoration, but it doesn't remove any of the slop. There's also some play in the joint between the piece that goes into the hitch and the actual rack that gets bolted to that. I used some straps to try and tighten things up, wrapping them around some frame parts under the hood, which worked ok. I'm not sure I trust the 200lb weight limit suggestion either. It made me nervous to run up and down the beach with a full load up front. It'll probably handle it, but it made me feel better to move my fresh water container to the bed when it was full. I also wish it was able to adjust up another couple of inches to get the cutting board at a more comfortable height.

Hi Charles, The Fish-N-Mate 692 Surf Mate 10 Rod Cooler Rack is meant to be attached onto a trailer hitch. The rod holders are not adjustable and in a fixed postion with this rod rack. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

I've always been a freshwater fishermen and love the lake flats with homemade PVC sand spikes. Now I'm moving to the coast and know absolutely nothing, but hope to learn how to surf fish. Are these items meant to be used such as sand spikes, or just for transportation? If it is for fishing, then how/why would you fish 10 or even 3 rods so close together?

These are for transportation and rigging. For actual fishing, you would need sand spikes.
