Great Reel for the Money
September 11, 2018
I mounted this reel on a Fin-Nor FSGC-7030 rod and loaded it with 30 lb backing and a 30 lb top shot of Power-Pro braid. Trolled for Mahi and Tuna off NJ recently and the bite has been good. The rod has a good backbone and loads up quick. The reel has a smooth drag and can apply plenty of pressure through the rod. The two-speed works great when the fish runs to the boat and in low you can crank them like a winch. I have old Fin-Nor Tycoons that I love but this outfit is great.

Squid Boy
Pros
  • None for the reel or rod
Cons
  • The rod is plain looking but will beat a lot of fancy ones.

Gets the Job done

I have not use a lot of high end reels so maybe my review does not matter much. Since I don't have a anything to compare this reel to I am just going to give you my experience from using this one. I paired this reel with a Daiwa Saltiga G heavy jigging rod. I cant remember the length. 5'8-6'0. Deployed at the moment so I don't have it in front of me. This reel is fast. Have had no problems getting the fish off the bottom. I went out with a couple of other guys and the barracudas was eating their fish before they could get them up. Not me, I have the fish up in no time. It work really well for pulling grouper off the bottom. Holds a lot of line for its small size. This reel is very light and looks really nice. it also has a big handle. The last time I got to use this reel before I had to deploy was last October. I hooked onto a Shark (don't know what kind) that was at least 6-7 ft. Within 10 min I had him up to the boat and the shark was exhausted. I thought it was dead. Reached down and cut the line just above the hook and it finally swam away real slow. I just ordered another for my father. For the price and performance you get out of it, including line capacity for its size, you cannot go wrong. Go ahead and pull up the specs for as many other reels as you want and you will see that this reel either compares or beats all the other ones, especially in price. I never make reviews but I can appreciate what Finn Nor has done here.

would this be a good reel for blackfish and or stripers from a party boat in NJ. plan on using 40 lb braid.

The Ltl 16 would make a great reel for black fish and Stripers off New Jersey. It has plenty of drag strength and line capacity for those deep wreck tautog.
