Danny Surface Swimmer
The outstanding success of this plug to attract big bass is due primarily to the unique swimming action it creates. Unlike minnow type plugs that swim from the nose, the Danny pivots more from a fulcrum amidships in the plugs body. It has been said that this more closely represents larger bait that heavier fish seek out.
Guide To Fishing Gibbs Lures
A true "classic" among swimming plugs, the Danny derives its swimming action from a fulcrum point "amid ships" compared to the nose action of the smaller minnow type plugs. This unigue action simulates larger baitfish, which should be kept in mind when retrieving so that the plug is not overfished. Let the current do most of the work, and vary your retrieve as you move the bait through different types of water. An occasional jerk of the rod tip that causes the plug to spurt or splash lightly can be very effective. At night, however, a steadier retrieve is more desirable. Fine-tuning should be restricted to the stainless wire eye of the plug, leaving the pan lip in its original shape. Bend the eye up slightly to obtain a deeper retrieve, and down for more surface action. Unlike our direct tie recommendation with other plugs, the Danny will work better from a black "Duo Lock" snap for a freer swimming action. A swivel is not needed. Remember, keep those hooks sharp and re-tie frequently to keep fresh line at the business end of your efforts.

Original Danny Comparison
October 31, 2020
My dad was the late Danny Pichney. Let me say immediately that I'm nowhere near the fisherman he was. I purchased several 2 1/4 oz swimmers because I was down to my last original and I didn't want to fish it. My dad sold his lures by their length, so I assumed that the 2 1/4 oz would be the equivalent of the original I wanted to replace. I was right about the length; but the diameter of my dad's lure at the widest point is 1 1/8" and the Gibb's lure is 1 1/4". That may not seem like much but it is a great difference in the overall size of the lure. I want to use the lure as a casting plug and this model appears to be more for trolling. It is still a fine quality product- it just didn't fit my needs. I'll just go down to the 1 1/2 oz.

A cow killer in calm water
November 18, 2019
These Danny lures are great. On a slow retrieve in calm water they have excellent action. They come equipped with excellent hooks. Don't mess with the angle of the lip, but you can turn the eyelet up for it to swim deeper or down for it to swim higher in the water.
Pros
  • Excellent action, great hardware.
Cons
  • Doesn't cast very far, not good in rough water
