Great long cast conventional
March 21, 2022
Great long cast conventional reel for the surf. Good first conventional as the brake system is very set it and forget it. Has worked great with 17# & 20# mono for drum and sharks in Hatteras.
Pros
  • Very east to maintain especially after a dunk and build like a tank.
Cons
  • Sits pretty high on the rod and can be hard to palm with smaller hands.

casts a country mile. very smooth and solid. overall a fine purchase. large capacity, with a proper reel tension setup, no backlash at all.
Pros
  • large capacity, super long casts, super smooth, great drag.
Cons
  • i haven't seen any so far.

Great Reel for the Price!
March 15, 2021
This Diawa Sealine X-SL-X40shabis an outstanding reel for the price. While a magnetic braking system would be a plus, it would also drive up the price. This reel is smooth casting, has a solid drag system and super fast retrieve.
Pros
  • Good craftsmanship
  • Good line capacity
  • Smooth casting
  • Solid performing drag system
  • Fast retrieve
Cons
  • Lack of magnetic braking means a bit of a learning curve in proper tuning and technique in order to avoid backlashes.

Great reel for casting. Could use magnetic braking on the larger models.
But with a little practice it casts fairly well. Used as a sturgeon reel on the columbia river. Good drag. No issues so far after a year.
Pros
  • Good drag.
  • Solid build.
  • Easy casting free floating spool.
Cons
  • No magnetic break on larger sizes.

Best Value surf reel
March 20, 2020
Ive been using the same SL30SHA for bait fishing going on 10 years - its up to the task for any striper, blue or ray in the NJ surf. Its built like a tank, easy to maintain, casts great right out of the box, you can speed it up with a bit of tuning but its perfect for most right out of the box. Well worth the $140 - you will not find a better reel for the price.
Pros
  • good drag, easy to maintain, easy to cast, great line capacity for surf fishing
Cons
  • none

Great reel year old still looks brand new
February 2, 2020
I use a couple of times a month. I have caught king mackerel, big barracuda, cobia, and red snapper on it. This reel handles 65 lb braid well. I plan to buy another one. I would not consider it a 100 percent casting reel because I do not think it has any spool brake system. However I can cast live bait away from the boat with it. I rinse it off and go again. Great reel I think. I have it on a star aerial live bait rod
Pros
  • Fast, durable, sealed drag system, easy to use,
Cons
  • Wish it had casting brakes
  • Must practice a lot to cast it good

Best go to reel
January 18, 2017
Simplicity, ease of use and solid construction make this a great reel. I caught a 40lb yellowfin on the SH30 but maxed on the drag, this reel would have been faster getting the fish onboard.

Worth it!

Just bought this item and its worth the $$$. Very good quality reel, have tested it and can achieve same distance as Penn 525 supermag.
As for TackleDirect, fast delivery and price way cheaper than the local tackle shop.

What type of rod would you pair the 50 size for surf fishing that.
1 Answer
The 50 size reel would pair well with a 11 or 12 foot heavy or extra heavy conventional surf rod.

Would you consider one daiwa sealine as a entry price into slow pitch jigging, let's say a 30 size for jigs up to 200gr in depth of max 250'?
1 Answer
Hi Denis, The Daiwa Sealine-X SL-X30SHA Ultra High Speed Reel could be used for slow pitch jigging but it wouldn't be ideal. I would recommend a Avet JX 6.0 G2 Single Speed Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/avet-jx-6-0-g2-rh-bl-ngp-reel.html This reel has a narrow spool and all aluminum body. It also features a high 6.0:1 gear ratio and would be great for slow pitch jigging. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

hey i be fishing from a kayak and I wanna know if this is good for trolling wahoo and kingfish and and going togging to
1 Answer
That would be a great reel for targeting those fish. The ultra high speed gears will allow you to quickly retrieve line on big runs, and allow you to tog fish and retrieve line quickly from depth.
