Great Reels For Texas Surf
May 17, 2015
I've got six of these. Two 50s, two 30s and two 20s. They are mounted on 12', 13' and 10' rods respectively. The 50s are great for throwing 8 & bait for big larger sharks. The 30s are perfect for bull reds, jacks and medium sharks. The 20s are for specks, pops and Spanish macs. Loaded with PowerPro I can cast them all at least 100 yards. Last year I pulled in a couple of bull sharks in the 6 to 7 foot range with the 50s. I can't even begin to count how many bull reds I landed with the 30s. The 20s are great for sight casting heavy spoons to schools of Jacks cruising down the beach or soaking finger mullet for whatever come along. I highly recommend these reels.
Pros
  • Great surf casting, easy to maintain/clean, very loud clicker
Cons
  • Black and gold color is sort of dated buy who really cares as long as it gets the job done.

No complaints about this reel. It's gear ratio is high enough for 400ft drops
And does just fine in the troll.

Shark Special
March 11, 2018
Was looking for something affordable for my shark trips and something i did not mind my buddies using as needed as well. So far so good. Has been durable and the drag has preformed as expected with no issues, which is not always the case with shark reels.
Pros
  • Affordable, durable and strong drag

Beast of a Reel
February 6, 2018
Here in South Africa we use the Saltist BG 50 series to target Big Sharks and Rays with it, it holds a big amount of line on it and with the smooth drag it makes fishing so much fun. I must say from my experience the reel is very robust and it will suit all your needs.

Great reel for the price
December 31, 2016
A reel that can easily fit into anyone's budget whether you are an avid angler or a beginner. This reel will hold plenty of 17 to 20 lb monofilament (300yds or more) along with a couple wraps of shock leader. It has a very distinct and loud clicker which is important when your rod is among a bunch of other fishermen. The coating on the aluminum feels great and is very durable. The star drag is perfect for bringing in big fish. The casting ability is easy, but the reel can be very fast and not controllable depending on the color brakes that you use and adjusting the spool tensioner. I have dialed mine in with no issues affecting my casting ability.
Pros
  • Affordable compared to other $200+ reels
  • Loud clicker
  • Plenty of drag
  • Great color and coatings
Cons
  • Not a real con, but can be uncontrollable if you are not careful with your settings, for example, casting into the wind.

The Lamiglas Triflex Lamiglas TFX7030CT Tri-Flex Graphite Inshore Rod would be a good fit pairing it with the daiwa Saltist 50 fishing for striped Bass, Blues and blackfish in the NE.

Why rods would you recommend for the size 40 daiwa saltist? I'd be using it from a boat to flatline/slow troll for kingfish.
1 Answer
The Shimano Teramar West Coast Inshore Conventional Trolling Rods would pair well with Daiwa Saltist 40 for the type of fishing you will be doing.

Is this reel made for casting, or for trolling? I've used conventional reels in the surf for many years, and while some reels say they are for casting (Penn Jigmaster) they often aren't really suited for it. Does this have magnetic spool control when casting?
1 Answer
This reel can be used for casting or trolling. Unfortunately, it does not have a magnetic cast control. If you are looking for a reel with that feature, I would check out Avet reels.
