Light, powerful and great action!

This is one of my favorite light setups for kayak fishing in the Gulf. I have caught everything from cobia, to large snook to small pins on this rod and it does not disappoint. I have paired it with a shimano stella 4000 fg, and it is not only perfectly balanced, but also the rig I can fish all day. The micro guides make it usable for slow pitch jigging and it is a beast. I am a true fan of the Daiwa proteus line of rods and would recommend it to any serious angler.

Small Guides...
February 22, 2019
PRSS64M rod is rated for 40-50lbs Braid, however, the small guides make very difficult to use 50lbs Braid with 60lbs leader... Even using PR or FG knots, the line still gets stuck with small guides. It should not recommend 40-50lbs Braid for PRSS64MS.

A little bit heavy weight for this kind of light jigging rods. I wish it could have 5oz or less for Mid-action rod. It feels like 9-10oz. The light jigging spinning rods should be under 5.5oz.

The reel recommendation for Proteus SS spinning rods is Daiwa Ballistic LT 4000D-C. It will work for Proteus SS L, LM, M action rods with 10-15lbs Braid with 20-25lbs leader. Daiwa Saltist 4000's reel foot is big for all Proteus SS L, LM, M rods, maybe Daiwa Saltist 2500 will be fine???
I will stay with Ballistic LT 2500, 3000, and 4000.

One of the best rod for NY, NJ striper jigging rod
August 21, 2018
It's fine rod for the price.
I think this hard blank is good for striper fishing.
But, I wish Diawa used lighter handle grip material.
It's light rod but handle weight kills this rod.
I use 120g-160g jig for this rod.

It's fine rod for the price.
Only little hard for tip action.
And I wish Diawa used lighter handle grip material.
It's light rod but handle weight kills this rod.
I use 80g-100g jig so I can give a good action.

Awesome little rod, has been used for everything from trout fishing in the marsh and bottom fishing 10 miles off the beach.
Pros
  • Does everything needed and much more.
Cons
  • Lack of gimbal butt, easy to replace if handy.

How big of a spinning reel is a good pair with this rod

I would recommend using a reel up to a 3500 series reel based upon the power ( L ) of the rod.

Would this be a good pair with a penn battle 5000 or is that too big?

The Daiwa PRSS64LS Proteus SS Spinning Rod is too light of a rod for the Penn Battle 5000.
