These take 330 yards of 15 pound line and will cast farther than that with the right payload. Anyone using the MH7MAG as a surf reel is going to be disappointed if using lures much over one ounce. I've had mine on a lami XCC 7'9" fiberglass/graphite rod for ten years and have been very happy with it with twelve pound braid for bank fishing in the bay. A 1-ounce Hopkins shorty will load up the whippy rod enough to run all of the line off the reel if I don't stop it with my thumb. Best reel ever made, for a very narrow range of applications.

The finest long range surf reel I have ever used. This is a distance reel for 10’+ surf rods on a clean beach. It is exceptional. It is like a sports car. You have to take care of it. Rinse with a little sudsy water after each use. Oil the bearings after each use. I use it on an 11’ Lamiglas xcra 1322. I kind of collect surf reels. I own 26 conventional reels. Akios, Daiwa, Penn, Abu, Shimano, from 6500 size to 7500. I melted the brake blocks on a Penn fathom in one afternoon of fishing last year. Good reel, but needs better blocks. Graduate up to this reel. Start with a Penn Squall. Another really good reel.

This real casts a mile, but fails to engage the handle about every 10th cast. You have to loosen the gear box cover screws and jiggle it to make it work. This must be a chronic issue because the screws are designed to be turned by hand with no tool. Does not matter if the reel is dry, greased or oiled, it still jams.

Had mine for a year and so did a friend (bought at the same time). Within the first month had a grinding in the ball bearings. I don't do any beach fishing at all so i assumed that i got salt inside of it and cleaned it to no avail. A week later my friend's reel started doing the same. Now both of these reels were thoroughly cleaned after each use. Luckily another friend of ours knew a Daiwa rep., and we got all of the internals replace for free. Upon receiving it the worked great.....for about a month again..... I went as far as to replace the "sealed" ball bearings inside with ceramic ones i bought online, which did help, but has not totally absolved the issue with their crappy bearings grinding and locking up.

No doubt this reel casts farther than anything I have ever seen! But unfortunately the clutch mechanism has been very unreliable, and I have had to send it back to the factory twice in the first six months I had it. I'm sure it is wonderful for tournament settings, but my experience it that it doesn't stand up to regular use in the surf. If you like to tinker with your gadgets, then get this reel by all means. But if you want a good casting reel that is reliable for use in the surf, go somewhere else.
