Great value

I got this rod (7 foot) to fish off my kayak with. It does a great job. It's not necessarily as good as other rods, and I have since upgraded to other rods (tackle direct 6'3" and penn rampage), but I'm keeping this as a backup or for a friend to use if I take them out fishing. That said, for the price, it's hard to beat. It was a great first rod for the yak for sure.

Don’t waste your money!

I paired this 10’ rod with a bg5000 reel with J-braid and found out that it has terrible ability to cast..

For comparison I have only 2 other rods and reels and I will share my feelings/experience.

Other setup 1: My bg4000 on a 7’ Daiwa rod that it came with allows me to cast farther than this 10’ FT boat rod and it’s not even meant for long distance casting. It has a great snap and feel on load up and allows you to feel your way to an amazing cast in 1-3 tries.

Other setup 2: My Penn Spinfisher 5500 on a custom 12’ rod casts for MILES but more importantly it’s predictable and feels great in a way that is similar to my 7’ rod on my other setup..

This 10’ rod by comparison is a horrible rod. It just feels so awful. The load up is stiff and has terrible feedback - and it’s not just me, either... I let my fishing buddy who surf fishes constantly try this out and he agreed with me that it was just plain no good.

If you are like me and bought the rod as a cheap way to get my New reel on the water or as a cheap way to try your hand at surf fishing, don’t do it! My advice is to either try surf fishing with your current setup, or to simply spend more money on a better rod.

Also - just so everybody knows, I have experience fishing high end Shimano rods, low end Shimano rods, an old Shakespeare rod, and a few custom rods mostly for trolling and deep sea fishing, so I have a varied experience among many types.... I wish I never bought the FT boat rod. TOTAL WASTE!
Pros
  • It can fit in my large trash can in 2 pieces.
Cons
  • Terrible load up feel
  • Terrible overall casting performance
  • Heavy (to be fair - this was expected)
