Good versatile Striped Bass Trolling Rod
February 1, 2022
I have mine paired with an older 113H Senator.

Flexible tip shows decent spoon action allowing me to set the speed properly for proper presentation. It does not show the spoon action to the level of a Tony Maja Spoon Rod but this is also 1/4 the price and it does show it much much better than a typical medium or stiff boat rod.

The rod also has a fair amount of backbone and the flex starts mid rod. Rod and reel combo has no issue with the typical 20-35lb stripers we get in the fall in NJ. Haven't caught a 50 pounder on it yet but I have caught a 45 inch striped bass on it and the rod handled it, rod has also handled doubles on an umbrella rig multiple time (40+ ponds combined).

It is a good affordable alternative rod for select applications that I only use a month or two of the year.
Pros
  • Shows bunker spoon action pretty well.
  • Longer foregrip is comfortable, especially to rest when reeling in a lot of line.
  • Cheap enough that if it breaks it is easy to replace
Cons
  • I do with the eyes closer the the reel were a little larger in size for the reel I use.

This might be the only area that Daiwa is just OK in

Their poles are nothing special, but they get the job done i guess. The reels on the other hand are a dumpster fire. would i pick one up as a real beater pole for guests and kids, yea, but they better have a good price tag for me to ever buy a Daiwa product again.
