Heckuva lot of fun for hardly any money

Bought this to dip my toe into fishing and found I love it, both fishing and this combo. This combo cost less than the rod or reel alone I bought next and it complains a lot less than the newer reel. I catch all kinds of fish with this guy. I've had him to Chincoteague and caught some croaker on the pier and more than a few bass back here in PA. It is a long, slow action rod and the reel isn't going to win awards for quietest reel but it gets the job done. Bail snaps shut, drag is smooth and easily adjusted. Simple and effective. It is not heavy, the rod breaks down into two pieces for easy transport and doesn't complain as my wife and I cut our fishing teeth on it. I learned more about fishing working with this combo than I paid for it, that's for sure. Load it with 6# or 8# mono and have yourself a ball. Bluegill, walleye, Large Mouth, Flounder, Croaker, any fish under 10 pounds. And if it should break, I will be sad but not because I feel like I just set $150 on fire like other gear failures, but because it will be the passing of our first combo that gave us so much for so little.
Pros
  • *cheap
  • *effective
  • *subtle color choices
  • *tough
Cons
  • *won't get your gearhound buddies drooling

Is the reel prespooled? Is the rod/reel suitable for fishing in brackish water?
1 Answer
Misha,

The Daiwa D Shock combos do not come pre-spooled with with line.  When you order one, you can ask for it to be spooled with whatever pound test you want of the 'house brand' mono for free.  Also, this combo can be used in either fresh, brackish, or salt water.  Just make sure to give it a rinse with fresh after use in salt/brackish.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.
