Nice affordable spinning reel!

Paired with a Tsunami TSCSHDII761M Carbon Shield II Spinning Rod, this was a nice choice for an affordable reel. I'm happy with it.

Only good for one summer
August 16, 2022
I paired up my 7’6” favorite rod with a BG 2000. Was a nice set up for fluke season in New Jersey. However I’ve been disappointed for two summers now. The real basically wore out after about 3 months. I returned it to Diawa. I will say they promptly repaired it and sent it back. Same thing happen next season. I fish it hard at least four days a week. It’s just not durable enough for me.
Pros
  • Decent weight, nice retrieval when it?s working.
Cons
  • Not very durable. Accidentally hook into a big fish like a cow nose Ray and you?re gonna burn it out.

Serious Value For Money
August 13, 2022
What's not to love. Has a fast retrieve, holds a lot of line, retrieve is smooth and allows a good long cast.

The drag is kind of silent so not the reel you would let sit and listen to hear it going off. You will have to be very close to it to ensure you hear the drag singing.

Pair this with some 40 lb braid on a 9 or 10 ft rod and you have a helluva set up to tackle fishing the surf and off the rocks.

Great reel for the money
August 11, 2022
I have reels that cover trout to tuna made by Van Staal on down. These reels epitomize the phrase bang for the buck. They are very good quality, cast well, have negligible slop and last season after season without signs of corrosion or wear. I have a pair of 3000’s, 5500’s and 6500’s all used in the surf or offshore. Highly recommended because they just do what you expect for the money.
Pros
  • Great performance, corrosion resistance and great price.
Cons
  • Rather not have the gold accents. Hardly an issue though.

Very nice reel
July 11, 2022
I have BG3000 I inshore fish with and handled many 40" reds in swift current. Also have a 4500 and 5000 I fish offshore with. Plenty of drag to handle good size red snappers. Hooked up with the taxmen several times too and had no issues with the reel. I love all 3 of mine.

Best the Best

I come from small reels the biggest was the sahara 5000 compared to the DW BG 5000 it looks like the toy shimano, the DWBG is a very heavy heavy reel but it feels like it is made of good quality I bought the 1500 / 5000 and that being the 8000 monster, I think that with the 5000 it does the same as the Shocorro 8000 from Shimano, the price was $150 for 5000 it makes it a saltwater reel of better quality / price
Pros
  • good quality
  • collects very well
  • grab a lot of line to be a 5000
Cons
  • very heavy, but for a lot
  • you need a 20/40 pound rod to make it balanced

Really happy
April 23, 2022
I have several Daiwa BG's and have been extremely happy with them. They fish like a much more expensive reel, and have never let me down. I fish the 4000 series for plugging for stripers and haven't felt outgunned with fish into the 40#s. I also have a 5000 series that I use for snagging pogies and it is a workhorse. The numbering feels a little off - 4000 the series matches up closer to the size of a 5000 from Shimano.

Good Value! I Bought this BG4000 as the MQ Was Launching.
April 18, 2022
I bought this as the newer version was launching - suspecting that it was just as excellent as all the 2021 reviews said it was. It is.

I have never spent over $200 for a reel. Instead, I keep an eye out for excellent offerings in the mid/value range from trusted brands.

This Diawa is a great addition to the arsenal.
Pros
  • Excellent value/quality.
Cons
  • None.

Great Reel with True Grit
April 14, 2022
Caught my first bluefin, a 55 pounder, on a BG 4500 last August off Catalilna Island, and the reel barely broke a sweat. Even after a long soak, I had plenty of line -- and smooth, powerful drag -- to land the truly beautiful fish in about 15 minutes. Impressive. But then I should not have been surprised. I'd caught yellowfin to 35lbs on this reel with no problem whatsoever before the bluefin trip. Liked the 4500 so much I bought a 6500. Can't beat the price and the quality. A BG will be a regular part of my arsenal this season for throwing bait or lures on kelp patties for yellowtail and school-sized tuna. Highly recommend the BG line.
Pros
  • price, quality, easy upkeep, strong, smooth drag,
Cons
  • None I am aware of

Perfect all around
March 10, 2022
Perfect all around very usable size in BG 2500. Pair this with a 7 ft tsunami salt rod. Is exactly right for close running Florida pompano. Then off to Canada use it to catch walleye. Smooth easy casting. I own 4 of them now.

Looking to pair a Daiwa bg reel with a 10ft Penn battalion. Fishing off piers in Florida, what size reel would be best a bg 5000 or a bg 6500?
1 Answer
The 6500 would be a better choice if using cut bait the 5000 would be good if your casting lures or spoons

Hello. I am about to purchase the bg 5000. Can i get it ready for right hand retrieval? And for backing, which line test do i use? As for the leader an all round 20-40 lbs (fluoro or mon?) will be good? Sorry for all the questions, am new to all of these.
1 Answer
You wouldn't need backing as this reel is braid ready, tie a knot and put a thin strip of electrical tape over the knot so the braid has something to grab onto to and doesn't slip on the reel. The reel is a dual retrieve and a 30 pound mono leader would be fine.

Does the BG 5000 have a carbon fiber drag? I know the Penn Battle series does, and I'm sitting on the fence between a Battle II 5000 and a Daiwa BG 5000, but I definitely want a carbon fiber drag rather than an antiquated felt one. Thanks.
1 Answer
Hi Jason, According to Daiwa, The BG series features Daiwa’s ATD (Advanced Tournament Drag) system which incorporates the use of Carbon fiber drag washers within the drag stack. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

What’s the best size for cobia off a pier
1 Answer
For cobia, the best options would be the 5000 or 6500 sizes. This would give you enough line capacity as well as drag needed.

Can't decide between the 5000 or the 8000 for jigging off of Panama City Florida. Primary targets are snapper, grouper, maybe some AJs. I'm going to pair this up with either a M trevala rod or a MH. I'm probably not going to be fishing anything heavier then 100g or 100g jigs due to water depth. 50 pound braid also. Please help me decide. Thank you
1 Answer
The Daiwa BG5000 will be more than capable reel jigging for AmberJack's, Snapper and Grouper in FL. Thank you for considering TackleDirect for your fishing needs and have a great day.
