By reimagining the way a spinning reel is designed, the Daiwa BG MQ Spinning Reels put unprecedented strength into the hands of saltwater anglers of all stripes. Built around a single-piece Monocoque aluminum body, the renowned BG series of reels is now stronger and lighter than ever before. With the Monocoque design, the reel body serves as a stiff, distortion-proof frame that keeps the reel's internal components in precise alignment even under the most extreme drag pressures. This allows for increased cranking power and torque while extending the life of both the reels gears and bearings. Not only does a single piece body provide extreme rigidity and strength, but it also eliminates the necessity for pins and screws to hold the body together, thus making the reel more resistant to water intrusion. The reel also features 9 internal rubber seals at key areas like the drag stack, spool shaft, handle, and side plate, making it well equipped for long seasons in the surf. Featuring Daiwa's precision cut DigiGears that are between 20% and 40% larger than those of the competition, the BG MQ is built for unrelenting power. With sizes ranging from backwater reels for flounder and speckled trout to large offshore reels made to battle giant bluefin tuna, the BG MQ has all your saltwater angling bases covered.

Daiwa Technology Found In BG MQ Spinning Reels:

  • Aluminum Body - Lightweight and incredibly strong, aluminium allows strength and weightlessness to be achieved without the cost and corrosion issues of other metals.
  • Monocoque Body - Monocoque Body refers to the use of a one-piece frame and reel body. A single piece body allows for exceptional strength and rigidity, better spatial efficiency for housing larger gears, improved water resistance with the absence of screws, and significant weight reduction.
  • DigiGear - The all-new DigiGear is precision machine cut and polished. This results in unmatched efficiency, better transfer of energy, and maximum smoothness.
  • Air Rotor - The Air Rotor weighs up to 15% less than ordinary rotor designs. Its unique shape reduces unnecessary weight while distributing stress more evenly throughout the rotor for maximum strength.
  • DigiGear - The all-new DigiGear is precision machine cut and polished. This results in unmatched efficiency, better transfer of energy, and maximum smoothness.
  • ATD Drag - The Advanced Tournament Drag system uses a new proprietary grease that enables the reel to apply smooth and consistent start up drag pressure from the first pull, eliminating the stop and go pulling of drag that can result in broken lines and lost fish.

Awesome drag and power for a reel this size
August 4, 2022
I matched this reel with a 6’6” medium weight Shimano Trevala and 40lb braid. It effortlessly handles those times when I hooked Jack in the 15-20 pound range and some large cubera snapper (I fish in Costa Rica and there’s some big jack here and cubera here). It’s also lightweight so really no strain with this size real. I have been using it with jigs between 60g-200g no problem.

I liked the design so much I ordered an 8000 to go with a medium heavy Shimano Trevala for deeper jigging.

Save your money on those real expensive reels. Buy more jigs instead. You’ll need them.
Pros
  • Great drag handles anything.
  • Lightweight and fast.
  • Handles as good as reels costing $500 more.
  • Very simple functionality keeps you thing uncomplicated
Cons
  • Took a session to get used to the manual bail. Past reels have been mostly Shimano Stradics and Spheros with automatic bails. That said, now I like manual bails better
  • Color of reel not as exciting as some cheaper models but reel colors dont catch fish.

Solid and well built
August 1, 2022
I have used this reel about a half dozen times for surf casting (in the surf). It gets splashed quite a bit. But, I rinse it gently after use and spray silicon lub on the roller hearing etc. I think it is one of my sturdiest of my reels. The drag is nicely adjustable. I also have a 6000 version that I like.

The only downside is the big mq s are a bit heavy.
Pros
  • Solid and durable
  • Good price
Cons
  • Heavy/chunky (compared to a Stradic or Ballistic)

The reel stood the test in every situation and the drag performs really well.

I have the bg mq 5000, I have used it about 10 nights fishing and on the retrieve I feel it vibrating and the handle gets stuck.  Why does this happen??
1 Answer
Hi Tom, If you are feeling an issue with reeling and are experiencing it feeling grindy, vibrating, or sticking that may be due to it having saltwater intruding causing corrosion leading to internals failing. We recommend contacting Daiwa's Warranty center for an inquiry on your reel's current state at (562)375-6800. Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with!

Hi BK, For your fishing application I would recommend a ODM NXGX-116 2021 Genesis Surf Spinning Rod. https://www.tackledirect.com/odm-nxgx-116-2021-genesis-surf-spinning-rod.html This is 11ft and rated for 1-6oz lures. This will be good to use light stuff on the beach but also strong enough to fight large fish in the Cape Cod Canal. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

Specifically model: BGMQ3000D-XH; TD Code: DAI-3509. https://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-bgmq3000d-xh-bg-mq-spinning-reel.html This reel has the water resistant sealing, drag strength and the line capacity needed to fish both shallow and deep water with ease for fluke and seabass jigging and would pair great with your Shimano Trevala PX Jigging rod. I require a reel that can withstand a quick rinse in the surf, get hosed down at the end of the day, and keep running smooth without additional maintenance. Is this the reel for me? what would you suggest around the same price point? I would like something with a slighlly better quality build than the tsunami shield.
1 Answer
If you are looking for a reel to withstand the surf without any more maintenance than a quick rinse, you should look into sealed reels like a Van Staal VR.

The Daiwa BG MQ will need more maintenance than a quick rinse to feel like new after the being dunked in the surf. It can certainly get the job done for surf fishing but you will notice wear on this reels after fishing in the surf. Regular cleaning and consistently greasing its sensitive areas will enhance its longevity. There aren't any sealed reels close to this price point.
