flex top stiff shank, short butt.
October 31, 2019
I mounted a Penn 9/0 with 80# mono line on my BFBT70XHR boat rod, put a 15" long PVC 1" ID pipe extension for better casting from the piers. With 8 oz weight I can cast more than 40 yards from the pier. One night I hooked up a Giant Black Sea Bass that peeled off 350 yd of line, pull it back 100 yd then peeled off again, more than 10 times. I released (very protected specie) this 400 lb 6' monster after 2 hours work. The flex top prevent the line snap when the fish took off, while the stiff shank pulled this big monster easily. A very good rod for huge fish.
Pros
  • Flex top with stiff shank.
Cons
  • Short butt for casting.

I bought this as a replacement for a Penn Defiance rod that broke. I was mad that my relatively new rod broke and wanted the cheapest replacement that I could find. When I got this rod I was pleasantly surprised. It feels much sturdier than my previous rod and also has a nice flex to it. The only negatives I can see are the plastic rod seat area and the lack of a gimbal base for locking in place.
Pros
  • -Cost effective
  • -Very sturdy
Cons
  • -Plastic Rod seat
  • -No gimbal base

What reel is recommended for this rod
1 Answer
Hi Julio, Depending on your fishing application, I would recommend a conventional reel. Specifically I would recommend a Penn SQLII20LW Squall II Level Wind Conventional Reel. https://www.tackledirect.com/penn-sqlii20lw-squall-ii-level-wind-conventional-reel.html This reel would pair well with the Daiwa BFBT70HR Beefstick BT Conventional Boat Rod for many bottom fishing applications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.
