The Shimano Corvalus baitcasting reels offer top quality at a very affordable price. With a diecast aluminum frame and aluminum sideplates, the Metal Series frames not only keep moving parts in precise alignment, they also feature the use of the latest anodizing, plating and painting techniques for beautiful and durable finishes. Other key features include Shimano's Variable Brake System (VBS) to aid in controlling the cast and Super Stopper with Assist Stopper to ensure instant hook setting power. The Corvalus 400 and 401 reels are equipped with Non-Disengaging Levelwind System and clicker.

Shimano Corvalus Baitcasting Reel Features

  • Variable Brake System (VBS)
Uses centrifugal force rather than magnets to aid in controlling the cast for increased distance and adjustability.
  • Super Stopper
One-way roller bearing that eliminates backplay for solid hooksets.
  • Assist Stopper
Back-up anti-reverse system that reduces the stress placed on the one-way roller bearing to increase durability.
  • Non-Disengaging Levelwind System (only on 400 and 401 models)
Allows the levelwind to track back and forth during the cast which reduces drastic line angles that cause unwanted friction and backlashes on wide-spool reels.
  • Metal Series
Metal frames keep moving parts in precise alignment for increased efficiency and durability.
  • Two Post Quick Take Down
By unscrewing the thumb screws the sideplate can be easily removed for maintenance or to adjust the VBS brake weights.
  • Rubber Handle Grip
Comfortable and soft to the touch.
  • Diecast Aluminum Frame
  • Aluminum Sides
  • Clicker (available on models 400 and 401)
Increases the tension on freespool and activates a clicking alarm when a fish bites.
  • Aluminum Spool

Nice reel for the price.

My buddy bought one as a first time fisherman last summer who insisted on having his own gear when he came out ona boat trip with us. Got to use it for a little while that day and test it out and was impressed for the price. Solid reels, and i hate saying that because I'm normally an Avet or Penn guy when it comes to reels, but this honestly made me think about picking up 1 or 2 of these for my friends and little cousins when they come out fishing.
Pros
  • great all around beginner reel if you have first time fishermen on the boat. If it goes overboard with a guest you won't have lost a $400 setup. Perfectly suitable as a backup reel for anything in the 20 lb range, but be prepared for a battle

Best $80 reel on the market
February 28, 2015
I fished this reel, actually two of them, were my catfish reels for 2 years. Awesome beginner reels, price is great, work great. Very smooth and solid. Don't waste your money on ABU's junk $80 reels. This reel in the 400/401 size is great. The drag is fine for fish up to about 25-30lbs, and they'll definitely work it a bit. I caught many 15-20lb flatheads on this reel with ease. Casts far, love these things.
Pros
  • Price, smooth, sturdy, well made, good line capacity, comes in left hand
Cons
  • Only 11lbs drag
  • Clicker switch is in a weird location

ok baitcasting reel
January 19, 2015
With this reel you pay for what you get. Its not the best but it definitely gets the job done. I dont like how the level wind disengaged when casting on the 300. Better off paying a little more for a better reel like the tekota

this reel shattered on the inside while i was clearing a backlash. a coil wrapped around the line guide base and the gears just broke to a million pieces while i was trying to wind the backlash out. maybe I should have put less force while winding but the quality of the components is questionable to say the least.
Pros
  • cheap
Cons
  • cheap

Would you recommend surf casting with the CVL 400? Are the ball bearings, stainless steel or CRBB? What is the ratio? How many yards and lb, test.for mono and braided? What is construction of spool?
1 Answer
Hello Salvatore. This rod would be great for surf casting fro small game. The ball bearings are stainless steel. The gear ration on this reel is 5.2:1. The braid ratings are as follows: 330 Yards/12lb. Mono/50lb. Braid 250 Yards/14lb. Mono/60lb. Braid 165 Yards/20lb. Mono/100lb. Braid These are die-cast aluminum constructed reels.
