Striper King

I have the BG 60...Bought it in the 80's....just got finished giving it a lube/cleaning job... works perfect, silky smooth and waiting for next year...people, take care of your gear and it will take care of that 35 lb. striper on the other end. This reel has another 10 years before I retire it...
Pros
  • durable!!!
Cons
  • line capacity...

I have the bg 10,13,15,and 30.
I've used these reels for years and not had any problems with any of them. Their one drawback is their weight, as they are metal framed and metal geared, making them more useful for live bait fishing than for casting continuously. Living in South Florida, these reels are a common sight on charter boats.
Pros
  • Simple, strong, robust construction at a reasonable price.
Cons
  • A little too heavy for a full day of plug casting, but great for live bait fishing

Just like it's cousins GS9s this is a one awesome reel. We've had our for over 30years and still going. Ours is the original made from Japan and the the smoothness when brand new like my new one, feels smooth as the modern reels now.

Absolutely terrible company for saltwater reels!
December 3, 2018
Had mine for a year and so did a friend (bought at the same time). Within the first month had a grinding in the ball bearings. I don't do any beach fishing at all so i assumed that i got salt inside of it and cleaned it to no avail. A week later my friend's reel started doing the same. Now both of these reels were thoroughly cleaned after each use. Luckily another friend of ours knew a Daiwa rep., and we got all of the internals replace for free. Upon receiving it the worked great.....for about a month again..... I went as far as to replace the "sealed" ball bearings inside with ceramic ones i bought online, which did help, but has not totally absolved the issue with their crappy bearings grinding and locking up.

Cons
  • Should not have to replace bearings after only a couple of uses with proper maintenance being done each time

I have owned this reel for one year now and have put it through its paces. Including big sharks and even a 30 pound king mackerel. The reel has handled with smooth drag and powerful cranking, time after time. One of the best features of this reel is the big drag knob on top makes it very easy to adjust during a fight. If you are looking for a reel to start saltwater fishing these reels are a great start. I will be buying a few more in the near future.
Pros
  • The price is great, larger drag knob for easy adjustment, durability.
Cons
  • Not a reel for fishing lures just bait

I cast plugs/jig from boat. inshore stripers, blues, flounder...I own four of these and one is still going 30 years later. I have a ton of reels, these are my favorite spinning reels. Great reels, don't let the low cost fool you.
Pros
  • Smooth drag, tough in saltwater environment, very durable , reliable. Tremendous value
Cons

Put this reel on a Pole and casted out some plugs, and caught some Stripers. They were small (25 - 27") but it was fun catch and release. I bought this to handle medium sized fish - i.e 5 - 30 lbs and It feels like its going to work out pretty well. Nice feel, good mechanics and pretty good quality for the cost. I am replacing some of the penn 4000, 5000, 6000's that I bought last year because I am not happy with them, and I think I have found my replacement reel. I will probably get one of these in the spring as well.
Pros
  • This came on time and all parts were in the box
  • I fish in saltwater, and this is a saltwater reel.
Cons
  • I have nothing bad to say

Malfunctioned after landing first fish
April 30, 2015
Bought this reel after researching online. Read nothing but positives relative to this being a workhorse basically bulletproof reel. While landing my first fish it malfunctioned with what seems like the gearing and possibly anti reverse acting up. Immediately sent it to Daiwa for warranty work/replacement. Given all the positives I read while researching I am assuming mine was simply a fluke. Otherwise I like the reel very much thus 3 stars instead of one or two.

old school reel but very RELIABLE

this is my 3rd bg 90 already! the 1st one, I bought it several years ago and still working like new! very reliable, easy to maintain, rinse off with fresh h2o after each use and grease it 1x/yr and you're good! still waiting for the drag to give up and probably replace it with carbon but it's been yrs and they're still good. bearings are very accessible for packing them with grease. I especially love the foldable handle. it makes it easier to transport. love the wooden grip as well. it makes it look classic. I've caught cudas, wsb, lings etc with it with no hiccups. the one reel to have and if you could only keep one!
