Container
June 20, 2019
I just opened the package containing my new 4 foot cast net. Upon removing the tie straps and opening the box I was disappointed to find the hinged side of the box was broken. I will have to find a better container to store my net. I hope I find the net itself to be in better condition than the box when I use it.
Cons
  • Very low quality storage box.

Betts 9PM Old Salt 3/8 inch Cast Net Customer Review
May 27, 2018
I purchased this net from TackleDirect and had it shipped to Australia. It is by far the best net I have ever used and is superior to anything available in Australia. The net is well-designed and constructed. Heavier mesh has been used at the stress points (along the whole lead line, and around the horn) reducing the risk of fatigue and failure. As I am an older man, I found the net a little heavy (probably should have bought the 8 foot version) so I cut off 1 pound of weights (19 leads) evenly around the lead line with a hacksaw, making it easier to throw. My initial 2 throws on the lawn at the house were reasonable and I was surprised to see how well the net opened even though I had not yet given the net any treatment with fabric softener. I had to adapt my throwing method from that used with a 7 and 8 foot net and very soon I was throwing perfect pancakes with a diameter of over 12 feet. On my first visit to the ocean, I caught over 50 green back herring in 2 casts (see photo). I found the net sank quickly, the fish were easy to tip out and I did not experience any tangles. The hand line is a good length. Because the net lays flat, I was able to reload it in record time.
Overall, you will not have any trouble with this net, and once you learn to throw it, will catch plenty of bait. The net should give you many years of good service if looked after. I found the TackleDirect price for the net and their service second to none. Thank you TackleDirect.

The net is made of mono which is a clear line but over time does appear white and it is made with lead weights at the bottom.

Are the nets made out of lead weights?? Also says 8' is that the correct height? Sometimes they come shorter
1 Answer
Hi Clarence, Correct The Betts Old Salt Bait Casting Nets use lead weights. The size 8' foot refers to how tall the net is. A 8ft cast net can spread up to a radius of 16ft or double the amount of the height. These are based off manufacturer specifications. Please let us know if theres anything else we can assist you with. Tight Lines.

have no experience with casting net and lm looking for one to catch mullets, which size is good?
1 Answer
Jay,

A good size net to start out with a 5ft net with 3/8 " mesh, like Betts Hi Tider Lead Casting net 5HMPB (BET-0035).  You will be able to pretty much catch anything including spearing, mullet, and peanut bunker.  The 5ft radius will let you cast in some tight places.  Please let us know if there is anything else we can assist you with.

Hi, I'm a first timer with Cast nets and I'm looking for one suitable for Sand Eels up to 6" - So fine Mesh. Please advise on what to buy and anything else to be aware of.
1 Answer
Your looking at the right model nets if your looking to cast for them. Unfortunately we do not sell a smaller size mesh, only the 3/8 inch mesh. The 6' - 8' nets would be a good size to start with. Once you get adjusted you can switch up to a size 10'-12'.
