New Standard for SoCal
July 10, 2021
Finally picked up this reel after many recommendations from friends and fellow anglers. Seen many of these lately on the local sport boats. I am truly impressed with this reel. This should be the new standard go-to for all socal offshore trips. It replaces the tried and true Penn 500 by light years. Never thought a lever drag would cast - how wrong I was. I can sling a jig as easy with this reel as any of my older star drags - and the new G2 series gives me more drag capabilities compared to similar sized star drags. 20# and 30# is the butter zone - but plenty of power if I need to spool with 40# for larger tuna. Having Avet build J models in every size brings back the memories of the narrow spools of old, with the casting capability and ease of laying line down evenly, larger spool diameter for better retrieval speeds, and now the modern strength and drag to stop pelagics in their tracks!
Pros
  • Great Drag on the G2 Series
  • Amazing free spool and casting for a lever drag
  • Solid frame with zero flex
  • West Coast sizes (Jig Models)
  • Affordable price!

Great Reel!
June 26, 2021
I have 3 of these reels. 1, 3 speed and 2 single speeds. I use these mostly for bottom fishing in the Gulf of Maine for cod and haddock, with an occasional halibut, if lucky.
The reels hold plenty of 50-60 lb. braid, for fishing at 150-250 feet deep.
A great reel, at a good price and made in the USA to boot! Can't go wrong with this purchase.
Pros
  • A lot of power in a small, light package.
Cons
  • I wish the clicker button was located in a better position,

Another Great Reel from Avet!
October 10, 2020
I have owned many Avet reels over the years. They have some of the smoothest most capable reels on the market. This MXJ G2 series doesn't disappoint. The G2 has 40% more drag than the previous MX series. It can easily handle fish up to 50lbs.

Can't get enough Avet
September 8, 2020
already had one MXJ and I needed to get a second one. Having the 2 speed reel gives me a second rig set up for yoyo lures or live bait. I love how smooth these reels are, they work great.

Beautiful Look and Feel
September 8, 2020
I have been eyeing on getting an Avet reel for some time and focused on getting something that i can learn to cast with, and start to perform some proper lure fishing. The look and finish is great but as I use the reel it just is so smooth and works great. The "MC" magic cast needs some practice but that goes with learning to cast with a conventional/bait casting reel. I'm happy, you will be too.

Why do you no longer list the reel weight?
1 Answer
I am not sure why the weight is not listed, the reels are approximately 19oz

How much 20 lbs mono can it hold ?
1 Answer
These reels are designed for braid. Unfortunately Avet doesn't even list mono capacity as a spec any longer. We do not wish to speculate on the capacity for 20lb mono.
