American Fishinbg Wire Surflon Micro Supreme is miniature 49 strand stainless steel wire that is extremely flexible and kink resistant. This wire is ideal for many types of sport fishing because it can be knotted to your bait and line like monofilament, it provides greater flexibility and less stretch than monofilament, and is generally smaller diameter per pound test, and therefore, less visible in the water.

Surflon Micro Supreme is extra limp and has virtually no memory or stretch. The wire enhances the action of live and artificial baits and adds a level of realism never before attainable using wire or other leader materials such as monofilament and fluorocarbon. This wire is ideal for presenting life-like bait at any depth and can fool tackle-shy Billfish while withstanding the violent razor-sharp strikes of King Mackerel and Shark. Excellent for casting flies and tempting the most discriminating toothy fish to the surface.

No other wire offers more realistic action both above and below the water. Low elasticity and high sensitivity allow you to set hooks faster and with more accuracy. Attach using common monofilament knots such as the Albright Knot, Clinch Knot, Nail Knot, Perfection Loop, Surgeon’s Loop, or Uni-Knot. Made in USA by AFW.

Put this crimped into barrels and you have the recipe for ending toothy fish from biting off.

I had no problems with it, but i still did crimp it. I Understand that the whole point of it is you can tie knots with it, but i like the extra security knowing that line isn't going anywhere.

I'm using this steel leader because the flurocarbon leader I've been using was getting bitten off. So far, so good.

Flexible and Strong - Great for Toothy Fish or Fishing in Structure
June 6, 2018
I fish the Gulf of Mexico in areas where the grouper hide in structure, and where there are also lots of toothy fish like sharks and king mackerel. This leader material snells hooks beautifully and makes strong loop knots for attachment to swivels. It is much easier to work with than single strand wire and holds up better to structural abrasion and breakage. The braided wire has a plastic coating which helps secure knots. It may shred when it rubs on structure, but does not change the strength of the leader. Fantastic product!
Pros
  • Knots well
  • Very limp material
  • Resists abrasion

Good for general toothy fish. Not for sharks!

As advertised you can tie select knots with this braided wire. It's a little tricky as the wire doesn't "lay where you put it" while tying. It tends to want to straighten, but with a short bit of practice it can be done. Works great for snelling hooks. I used the 40lb test for surf fishing NJ. It was fine for bluefish, but when a shark picked up the bait I got bit off several times after 2-5 minutes of fighting the fish. The knots held fine. Examining the leader after losing the fish showed it to be either cleanly cut or abraded through, perhaps by its skin as well as teeth. A higher pound test might be more effective, but I've used 40 lb "conventional" wire for this purpose that did not break. In general I like this product, just have to work with its limitations.

Good leader material

It is a thinner version of the nylon-coated AFW surflon wire. Now I prefer this one over nylon-coated version because I can use much stronger wire for the same thickness, or thinner wire for the same strength. Never lost a fish or a lure with this wire.
Pros
  • somewhat stiff
