Lower Gear Ratio Penn Fathom 300LP Equivalent
    December 12, 2021
I have both this reel and a Penn Fathom 300LP. Abu Garcia and Penn are both presently owned by the same company, and the reels are nearly identical. The color scheme and logo is obviously a bit different, and this reel has a better handle in my opinion (slightly larger knobs). I don't know enough about the difference in internals, so we will see how this holds up compared to the Fathoms for saltwater use. But so far, this has been a great reel for fluke, sea bass and even some lighter tog fishing.
    Pros
    • Lower gear ratio than a Penn Fathom 300LP, very smooth
    Cons
    • If you palm the reel and cross the front of the reel with your index finger really hard, you can get "bite" from the level wind on the inside of your index finger...depends on reel seat on which the reel is mounted and size of your finger.

Can't really knock this reel, I like the stealthy look. Performance wise you can't ask for anything more smooth casting, smooth retrieval, nice line capacity, plenty of drag more than you'll probably need. Can't go wrong with this reel.
    Pros
    • plenty of line capacity, smooth casting, plenty of drag.
    Cons
    • None

Reel is slightly larger than original model,Abu must have done a bearing change (this reel is dangerously very freespoolant, if that’s even a word ).The increased drag pressure is very prominent but not necessary. This model does not have the shiny surface of previous model but does look pretty stealthy with the top of reel body flat straight.Unlike most reel companies that just try to upgrade a previous model with the same chassis.Abu actually redesigned this one.
    Pros
    • More line capacity (Rarely needed )Good selling point.! Slightly larger frame very stealthy looking.Inredible casting right out of the box.I guess nowadays the more drag the better?
    Cons
    • Can?t really say anything wrong about this model except that it would have looked better with the shiny surface on the side plates, but oh well.Change is sometimes good and overall this reel is very good!
