I've been looking around for a pike reel, is this reel
suitable for throwing lures up to 1½oz with 50lb. braid?

If you will be solely targeting pike in Minnesota with this reel, I'd advise a larger baitcasting reel, especially if you are using a 50 lb. braid. I'd suggest looking at the Revo Toro Beast, Shimano Tranx, or Daiwa Lexa.
