Casts a mile & has tons of capacity
February 5, 2020
This is a really long casting reel with magnetic casting control and it has tons of capacity and 20 lbs of carbon drag. I think it would appeal more to the surf fishermen than for someone like me that fishes from a boat or my dock.
Pros
  • You can cast this a long way and dial in the magnetic casting control to reduce the chance of backlash. It also has TONS of line capacity and it's pretty light.
Cons
  • It's expensive and for someone like me, new to bait casters and casting conventional reels, a big capacity 6k spinning reel, i.e. saragosa, would be a better choice for the money.

This reel out of the box was a 100 yard caster coupled with 12 foot penn rod. Super happy with reel. And it looks Badass

Great reel
November 13, 2017
Excellent cast control. Even though I'm still somewhat inexperienced using baitcasting reels, I had no birds nests when casting, even when I tried to. Paired with a 10 1/2 st croix mojo 2-6, it really performs.
Pros
  • Cast control, comfortable handle, easy to take apart and clean
Cons
  • None

Terrific Surf Reel
August 23, 2016
I've been using this reel for well over a year now for west coast surf fishing with flawless results on a St Croix Avid 10' surf rod, and 10lb Ande tournament mono. It's been soaked repeatedly in salt water with no problems. Super easy to take down for rinsing and cleaning. Upgraded spool bearings to Boca orange seal ceramic with high speed oil for best performance. I only need to use a bit of the mag brake when casting (no centrifugal or mechanical braking needed if you're an experienced caster), very quick and easy to adjust for wind conditions. I've used Abu baitcasters for over 40 years and this is my favorite. Thanks to Abu for making such a great reel!
Pros
  • Compact, light, sharp looking, top quality reel made in Sweden. Easily outcast any spinning reel.
Cons
  • Recommend upgrading the spool bearings (simple to do) for some serious distance. Seems a bit overpriced when compared to the other Abu Swedish reels like the Record with a level wind and more bearings. Those magnets must be expensive!

Best conventional surf reel I've owned! Superior cast control, long distance casting and great retrive. All in a compact attractive design.
Pros
  • Great value when compared to other reels in its class
Cons
  • Only one size

Nice Reel
December 19, 2014
I fished with this reel last week for Mutton Snapper in Florida. Very nice. Smooth drag and the reel handles very nicely on fish in 125 feet of water. Very much in line with the all the 7000 reels over the years. All of this said. I only have used it for one week of fishing. Will give it a real workout over the Summer when I fish the reefs from May-August in Florida. I see no reason this reel will not work very nicely as part of a basically "light tackle" set up for reef fishing up to 140 feet.
Pros
  • See my general review
Cons
  • None as of yet.

What does CT FRAME MEAN
1 Answer
The open CT frame allows for your hand to easily access the line on the spool during casting for easy control. Basically has a lower profile frame for more accessibility than most other similar styled reels.

What will be the best rod model to use for surf casting? My 12f Penn is too big for this reel. Thanks
1 Answer
The Penn Prevail 10', Penn Carnage II CARSFII1530C10 Surf Casting Rod - 10', or the St Croix MSC106MHMF2 Mojo Surf Casting Rods would be good choices for the Abu Garcia Ambassadeur Blue Yonder Baitcasting Reel.

what keeps line even on the reel.
1 Answer
Because this reel does not have a level wind you will have to use your thumb to correct the line lay if it is not laying evenly on its own.
